This chapter discusses the Brazilian semi-arid region, which is briefly characterized according to climate, vegetation, geology, soil types, and some soil formation processes. The soil water content in deeper layers of an intensively irrigated area of this region has been monitored at several sites. Excess water for crops and slow drainage caused by dense subsurface layers and crystalline rocks have contributed to water storage at deeper soil depths. Several horticulture crops cultivated in the Brazilian semi-arid region have root systems capable of reaching soil depths of at least 1 m and are drought tolerant. Deficit irrigation should be considered as an opportunity for reduced water application by irrigation systems to enable crops to use the water stored in deep layers of irrigated soils. The results of soil water monitoring in irrigated soils are discussed and suggestions for future research are presented. |
